Are you interested in U.S. relations with Asia? Do you want to learn how to effectively communicate research on Asian politics to U.S. policymakers, the media, and the corporate community? The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is recruiting an intern for its Washington, D.C. office to support its activities that reach out to Congress and engage the media and corporate sector. This is an unpaid, part-time (15-20 hours per week) internship position beginning immediately.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Supporting all ongoing Outreach programs and activities
  • Providing logistical support for NBR’s Engaging Asia conference
  • Providing background research for staff meetings and briefings on Capitol Hil
  • Assisting with media outreach and drafting press releases
  • Contributing by developing new ideas and content for NBR’s website
  • Supporting NBR DC public events and other office needs as necessary

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Project Assistance: drafting and proof-reading project descriptions, concept papers, etc.; helping maintain project documentation, web-pages, and SharePoint pages
  • Event Planning: providing administrative support to conferences, workshops, presentations, and briefings
  • Administrative Support: answering incoming calls to the organization; maintaining and updating contact database and SharePoint site, as needed
  • Participating in and supporting other NBR activities as needed

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be a current B.A. or M.A. degree student with an interest and knowledge of Asian and national politics and U.S. foreign policy. A successful applicant will be driven, creative, and work well under pressure with demonstrated superior organizational skills.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is a requirement, and familiarity with SharePoint is a plus. Experience using social media networking tools in a professional setting is a plus, but not required. Knowledge of web/graphic design is a plus, but not required.

Office Assistant Intern
Seattle, WA


Are you a recent graduate looking for a part-time job? Do you enjoy customer service, excel in the areas of organization and communication, and have a passion for the details? The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is recruiting an Office Assistant Intern for its Seattle office. This is a paid, 25 hours per week, temporary (6-month) internship position beginning immediately. The preferred work schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00am-1:00pm. The Office Assistant Intern reports to the Executive Assistant to the President/Office Manager and assists with administrative activities that facilitate the smooth running of NBR’s Seattle office.

Specific responsibilities include assisting the Office Manager with:

  • ensuring that phones are covered at all times during business hours
  • taking inventory of and maintaining office equipment and supplies
  • managing NBR’s internal information and contact database (BREE)
  • managing NBR’s institutional filing and storage systems
  • tracking Institutional Development donations by maintaining a hardcopy and electronic
  • documentation system of donations received
  • planning and coordinating office events
  • supporting special projects and events, including board of directors meetings and institutional development activities
  • preparing meeting materials, agendas, correspondence, memoranda, etc.
  • composing, typing, and sending correspondence
  • other duties as assigned

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Project Assistance: drafting and proof-reading correspondence, proposals, etc.; helping maintain project documentation, web-pages, and filing systems
  • Institutional Development Support: reviewing, fact-checking, proof-reading and formatting correspondence and publications; assisting with distribution/mailings, etc.
  • Database Administration: maintaining and updating databases; data entry and research for institutional and project databases
  • Event Planning: providing administrative support to conferences, workshops, presentations, and briefings (drafting agendas; assisting with travel, accommodation, and venue arrangements; note-taking, etc.)
  • Participating in and supporting other NBR activities as needed

Qualifications: He/she must exercise good judgment and possess excellent organizational and communication skills. As one of NBR’s first point of contacts (in person, over the phone, and by email), the Office Assistant Intern must advance a welcoming, professional demeanor and appearance. The ideal candidate should be a motivate self-starter who can work independently or as part of a team, pays acute attention to detail, and is not afraid to roll up their sleeves and undertake a variety of responsibilities.

Strategic Asia Internships

Are you interested in international affairs and Asian studies? Would you like to be involved in a program that aims to strengthen and inform policy decisions through innovative research on challenges and opportunities for U.S. national interests in the Asia-Pacific region?

The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is seeking two unpaid, part- to full-time interns to join the Political and Security Affairs (PSA) group and work within the Strategic Asia project team to assist in accomplishing specific project objectives. This internship is mentored by the Director of the Pyle Center for Northeast Asian Studies and the Program Coordinator, PSA, and by project leaders in any given project.

Key responsibilities include

  • Database Maintenance: Identifying, researching, inputting, and reviewing, numerical data sets for the Strategic Asia Database
  • Research Support: Providing substantive research support for Strategic Asia and/or other PSA initiatives, including gathering and interpreting information and summarizing research papers
  • Project Assistance: Drafting, reviewing, fact-checking, proof-reading, and formatting documents related to the Strategic Asia program and/or other materials as appropriate; assisting with publications distribution; planning meetings and launch events; working with scholar and speaker invitees; and researching key thematic issues
  • Administration: Managing information related to the Strategic Asia program, including tracking contract agreements and chapter drafts; updating contact lists; and managing filing systems
  • Event Planning: providing administrative and logistical support for briefings, workshops, presentations, and conferences (e.g., drafting agendas; assisting with travel, accommodation, and venue arrangements; note-taking, etc.)
  • Office Support: Answering incoming calls to the organization and covering the front desk
  • Participating in and supporting other NBR programs and activities as needed

Qualifications

Excellent written, oral, and research skills are required, as well as substantive expertise and interest in Asian politics and contemporary U.S. foreign policy towards Asia. In addition, the intern should be a motivated self-starter who can work independently or as part of a team, pays acute attention to detail, is organized, and works well under pressure.

Are you interested in the international politics of Asia? Do you want to apply your Japanese language and writing skills towards bridging the gap between Asia scholarship and U.S. policymakers? The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is seeking an Intern to assist with Japan-related activities including administrative functions and research. This position reports to the Project Director as an unpaid, part-time (12-15 hours/week) intern.

Responsibilities

  • Research & Information Gathering and Writing: provide research and information gathering assistance for project teams and partners, summarize and present information and research results/outcomes, and perform other research and writing assignments
  • Database Administration: maintain and update databases
  • Event Planning: provide administrative support to conferences, workshops, presentations, and briefings (draft agendas; assist with travel, accommodation, and venue arrangements; and prepare materials, etc.)
  • Phone Support: answer incoming calls to the organization
  • Other: participate in and support other NBR activities as needed


Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in both Japanese and English
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word & Excel
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently
  • Strong attention to detail and interest in research, writing, and event planning
  • Interest and knowledge in health and aging are a plus
