Using its "network-of experts" business model, NBR brings together the best scholars from around the world for an ongoing examination of trends and developments in the region. Through a variety of publication platforms, including NBR's flagship annual volume Strategic Asia, the peer reviewed journal Asia Policy, and the NBR Analysis series, as well as through conferences and private briefings, NBR makes available the best possible research to the global policymaking community.

The institution organizes its research around three broad topics: politics and security, trade, economics, and energy, and health.

POLITICAL AND SECURITY AFFAIRS

Innovative, forward-looking policy research on a range of issues, including Asian security, with a particular focus on:

  • China security issues and nuclear proliferation,
  • Muslim Asia,
  • strategic studies, with the Strategic Asia Program,
  • futures studies, and
  • political cultures.

TRADE, ECONOMIC, AND ENERGY AFFAIRS

Policy research focused on two areas:

  • energy and the environment and
  • trade, investment, and economic engagement.

Flagship programs include the annual Energy Security Conference; the China's Strategies on Intellectual Property Rights, Technology Standards, and Innovation initiative; and the annual Pacific Energy Summit, which strives to foster economic and energy security in the Asia-Pacific by developing practical, market-based solutions to the dual challenges of rising energy demand and global climate change.

CENTER FOR HEALTH AND AGING

The Center for Health and Aging (CHA) organizes the flagship Pacific Health Summit, an annual Davos-level meeting that brings together global leaders from science, industry, and policy. The goal of the Summit is to transform global healthcare through the prevention, early detection, and early treatment of disease through the use of emerging science and technology.
