What is The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR)?
The National Bureau of Asian Research is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research
institution dedicated to informing and strengthening policy in the Asia-Pacific.

Is NBR affiliated with any political party?
NBR is committed to providing nonpartisan research.
The institution takes a politically neutral stance on issues of public policy and will
thusly have no preferential association with any political party, commercial interest,
or special interest group.

NBR maintains programs on Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Eurasia,

How does NBR receive its funding?
NBR’s funding comes from individual
contributions, private
and public foundation grants, corporate donations, and government contracts.
NBR’s diverse funding sources enable the institution to provide independent research
on key issues in the Asia Pacific facing U.S. policymakers today.
Why should I support NBR?
America’s stakes in Asia and Russia, long vital to the nation’s security and prosperity,
have deepened, and the policy issues have become ever more acute and complex. As exemplified
by the extraordinary concentration of world power in the Asia-Pacific and ongoing tumult in
the region, the national need in the public and private sectors for accurate and timely information
and analysis is simply critical. Continued support from a broad base of funders strengthens the institution as it enables us
to focus on the core elements of our mission and guiding principles.
What are the benefits of supporting NBR?
Donors to NBR join a network of policymakers, experts, and business leaders who are
attuned to the importance of Asia in the 21st century and receive access to privileged
information on new developments in the region. Donors receive a variety of benefits
according to the various levels of sponsorship:
Supporters ($50 – $249)
Receive the NBR Bulletin, NBR Briefings, and select issues of the NBR Analysis,
Asia Policy, and Special Reports.
Friends ($250 – $499)
Receive all publications offered to Supporters plus the annual Strategic Asia
volume, NBR Special Reports, the NBR Analysis series, and Asia Policy.
Sponsors ($500 – $999)
Receive all publications offered to Friends plus advance invitations to NBR
conferences, briefings, and Email Discussion Fora.
Patrons ($1,000 – $9,999)
Receive all benefits offered to Sponsors plus invitations to Foreign Relations
Discussion Group meetings and complimentary copies of NBR books.
Benefactors ($10,000 and above)
Receive all benefits offered to Patrons plus complimentary copies of NBR
video/television series and invitations to special NBR events.
What does my donation support?
General donations will go to NBR’s operating fund,
which provides administrative support to all of the institution's programs. Gifts to
the general operating fund provide critical long-term
stability to the organization and the flexibility needed to embark upon
initiatives that require immediate funding. If specified, your contribution
may also be used to fund individual research programs at NBR to ensure that we
address the issues that are most important to you (please check the relevant
boxes on the giving form).
Are donations to NBR tax-deductible?
NBR is a tax-exempt, charitable organization
that is eligible to receive tax-deductible donations under IRS code 501(c)(3).
Please let us know if you require a copy of the institution's IRS determination.
What are the different ways to support NBR?
Monetary Donations
One way to support NBR is through a direct donation to the annual fund.
Annual fund contributions go to NBR’s general operating expenses,
or can be designated for use in a specific program. Donations can be
made by credit card (MasterCard, Visa, or American Express) through our
secure online giving form,
or by printing out a
giving form and sending it to NBR with a check or money order.
Automatic Contributions
In lieu of a one-time monetary donation, you may arrange to support NBR with a
donation automatically on an annual, quarterly, monthly, or other specified time
basis. Arranging for a direct deposit is the most convenient
and efficient method of putting your donation to immediate use. Please check the recurring
gift option on our
secure online giving form or use our
giving form to set up this process.
Matching Gifts
Many companies will match donations by their employees to charities. Your matched gift provides
twice the amount of support to NBR. If your company matches gifts, simply fill out your
company form and send it along to NBR with your gift. For questions, please contact

In-Kind Contributions
In-kind contributions are non-cash inputs that can be assigned a cash value for tax deduction
purposes. It is possible to donate goods or services to NBR in the form of an in-kind
donation.
For example, individuals and corporations have donated software, legal counsel,
office equipment, and other items or services to NBR.
Donation of Securities
By donating securities to NBR, you may be able to avoid the capital gains tax on such a gift.

Endowments and Named Giving Opportunities
NBR provides opportunities to contribute to its general endowment or to establish a new
endowment to honor a special individual. Endowments are critical to NBR’s future in that
they offer long-term, stable funding to the institution by providing an initial principal
sum to serve as a financial anchor. Named endowments are particularly useful in that they
create an enduring legacy by linking the donor’s name in perpetuity to an area that is
relevant to his or her life achievements.

Bequests and Other Planned Giving
Other giving possibilities to NBR include
bequests through a will or estate, as well as annuities, deferred gift
annuities, and trusts—most of which provide the donor with income for life,
and may avoid capital gains taxes and reduce estate taxes. Please contact

Every couple of months, we feature one of NBR’s generous supporters and take a closer look
at the work their contribution is supporting.
The Henry M. Jackson Foundation provided NBR
with its founding grant in 1989, and continues its generous and steadfast support.
In addition to funding the institution’s internship program, publications, and numerous
special projects, the Jackson Foundation most recently enabled NBR to launch
its peer-reviewed academic journal,
Asia Policy. This publication aims
to not only bridge the gap between academia and policymakers, but also to attract
the next generation of Asia scholars whose careers depend on publishing.
